FAQ about Smile Buddy Oral Appliance Sterilizer

How does UVC light work

UVC is a wavelength of light that doesn’t exist naturally in the earth’s atmosphere. UVC destroys the DNA and RNA strands of pathogens, making them unable to replicate. UVC can be artificially created in a bulb—and more recently in an LED substrate—UVC has been used as a very effective disinfectant against viruses, bacteria and fungi for decades.

How do I know it is actually working?

Smile Buddy Oral Appliance Sterilizer is designed with external indicator lights so that you can “watch” the cleaning process, even though both germs and UVC light are invisible to the naked eye. The external indicator light turns Blue indicating the start of the UVC sterilization process.

Immediately after the sterilization cycle, you might find the appliance slightly warmer and there might be a mild smell of “burning hair” or “garlic”. The smell is from breakdown of protein molecules (residual from saliva) caused by the UVC energy. The smell can be washed off with water. Researches have shown that the residual odor after UV disinfection do not pose a health hazard to humans.

Does UVC cause damage to my appliance?

Because UVC has shorter wavelength than UVA or UVB (UV light from the Sun), it does not cause damage to the items being decontaminated. The impact of UVC on plastics, metal, or the other materials is negligible.

Can I be hurt by UVC?

Because UVC light has very short wavelength of light, it can be stopped by almost any material. Smile Buddy Oral Appliance Sterilizer is made of UV light resistant ECO ABS material, so you will never be exposed directly to the UVC light. In addition, the sterilizer has child safety lock feature with magnetic switch design. During operation, if the box is opened, the UVC light will automatically and immediately turn off.

What is the power supply of Smile Buddy™ Oral Appliance Sterilizer?

Smile Buddy Oral Appliance Sterilizer has built in high-capacity lithium 800 mAh battery with USB charger.

Does my mouthpiece need to be dry before putting in the sterilizer?

Yes we recommend to dry your mouthpiece/appliance before putting in the sterilizer.
